The first signs of urban type settlement in the history of island Vis date back to 397 BC when Dionysius the Elder founded the colony Issa on the island. The purpose of the colony was to protect the northern Greek border. It had a city-state type of organization - so-called Pollis which had its money, flag, coat of arms, seal costume service, army and even diplomacy. In the history of the island Vis the city-state was well organized and we can find numerous proofs of that in ancient remnants of squares, thermae and city aqueduct characteristic for well developed cities of that time. At the peak of its power it even had colonies such as Lumbardia on Korcula island, Tragurium (now Trogir), Epetion (now Stobrec) and many others small places and ports. Purpose of those colonies was to control and better defend the territory of the city. In 47 BC, City of Issa lost its city-state status and became one of the many cities in the Roman empire. History Of Island Vis is recording the strong urbanization of the city which is characteristic for that period. We know that a theatre, an amphitheater, a forum and many other buildings were built in the history of the island Vis. Unfortunately, due to devastation throughout the years, the remnants of those buildings can't be found.
